Allerton Garden

Allerton Garden (125 acres), also known as Lawai-kai, is a botanical garden located on the south shore of Kauai, Hawaii. It is now part of the National Tropical Botanical Garden, and open to visitors daily except Sunday. An admission fee is charged, and reservations are required.

The garden is situated beside the Lāwaʻi Bay, in a valley created by the Lāwaʻi Stream, containing lands once used for taro cultivation and fishponds by the Hawaiians. Queen Emma of Hawaii resided above this valley for a short interval, and a modest house that was perhaps her residence has subsequently been moved to the valley floor and renovated. The entire valley, including what is now the adjacent McBryde Garden, was purchased by the McBryde family in the late 1800s for a sugarcaneRobert Allerton and his adopted son John Gregg Allerton purchased a relatively small portion of this plantation for development as a home and pleasure garden. The gardens became a part of the National Tropical Botanical Garden in 1963-1964, shortly before Robert Allerton's death in 1964. plantation. In 1938

The garden currently contains the Allertons' home, situated on a flat lawn shaded by numerous palm trees, as well as the following garden features:

  • Bamboo Garden - a dense grove of yellow-trunk bamboo.
  • Cutting garden - ornamental flowers for cuttings.
  • Diana Fountain - Statue of goddess Diana, with reflecting pool and pavilion.
  • Mermaid Fountain - Two small bronze mermaids in a garden room, linked by an unusual waterway (126 feet long) with water pulsing in small waves as it flows downwards.
  • Moreton Bay Fig Trees - Planted in the 1940s, and featured in Jurassic Park.
  • Thanksgiving Room - Reflecting pool, summerhouse, Italian bronze statues.
  • Three Pools - A series of pools, with cascades of scallop shells, set within a garden room.
  • Tropical Fruit Orchard - Some 75 trees planted as a victory garden, including acerola, lychee, mango, pomegranate, pummelo, and star fruit.
